The Indira Gandhi International Airport is ready to set an example by becoming India’s first plastic-free airport by the end of 2019. The process began with reducing single-use plastic consumption by eradicating the use of plastic in food packaging, bottles, grocery bags, straws, containers and a lot more.
First Plastic-free Airport in India
Delhi’s IGI airport is rated among the best airports in India. The airport authorities have taken up several initiatives to create awareness, reduce overall waste generation through recycling and waste management. Various blue and green bins have been installed to separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said that this initiative aligns itself with India’s pledge to eliminate all single-use plastic in the country by 2022. To implement this initiative, a special force has been employed solely dedicated to this task, making sure the waste is being treated properly.

Single-use plastic items or disposable plastics are items that are used only once before being disposed off. It includes items such as plastic bags, straws, soda, and water bottles, food packaging materials and a lot more. Other Airports in India following in the footsteps of Delhi Airport
There are various other airports in India that have taken this initiative. The Bengaluru International Airport Ltd. (BIAL) is also taking several steps to build an eco-friendly environment by reducing single-use plastic.
All four lounges and food outlets in the airport have taken strict measures to decrease dependency on plastics. This is being done by eradicating the use of straws, plastic knives, food wrappers, packaged snacks, etc.
